When reading guitar music, how do you know which way to strum?

I am teaching myself guitar, and I read tabs. I am playing the right chords, but the song does not sound right. Because I am not strumming correctly. Look at this link http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/tabs/j/jason_mraz/im_yours_crd.htm -How would you find out the way to strum?

1. when using tabs....it is very important to know the song or have a copy handy...that will help your strumming....I have never seen any strum direction on the tabs I have used.
